Gum disease or periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. Some studies show it affects 80% of the population. It may be in the common form of gingivitis or a more advanced periodontal disease.
Common signs of gum disease include:
- Gums that bleed when flossing or brushing
- Bad breathe
- Loose teeth
- Gums that are colored dark red or purple
The only way to identify and be evaluated for gum disease is to go to your dentist and have a periodontal evaluation. Your gums should be evaluated every time you have your teeth cleaned. Gum disease, like other diseases, can become worse while under stress so the best way to stay healthy is regular checkups and good dental care. Many people are not aware that periodontal disease can be linked to several other diseases such as heart disease, some forms of cancer, liver problems, kidney problems and a host of other diseases. Infections of the mouth can cause bacteria to get into the blood and cause infections elsewhere in the body.
Remember, it’s not only important to smile, but to take care of that smile and keep it healthy!
